Il mercato britannico dell’home<\/a> improvement, nel 2015, \u00e8 cresciuto, a valore, del 4%. Questo il dato fornito dall’AMA Research<\/strong>, l’istituto di ricerca britannico di riferimento per il settore. Come per altri mercati, anche in terra d’Albione, \u00e8 la macrocategoria del giardino a trainare il mercato con una quota del 20% sulle vendite totali<\/strong> e che comprende anche prodotti definiti per il tempo libero all’aria aperta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuttavia tra il 2004 e il 2012 il mercato del DIY&Garden \u00e8 calato da 12 a 10 miliardi di sterline<\/strong>, con una risalita dal 2012 fino ad oggi, che ha riportato il valore del mercato a 11 miliardi di sterlina, ancora al di sotto rispetto al valore del 2004. Questo secondo il rapporto mdj2 Associated, realt\u00e0 di consulenza del retail, dal titolo ” Le grandi scommesse – Chi vincer\u00e0?” basato sui dati espressi da Verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dopo un decennio in cui il mercato ha vissuto una graduale evoluzione, la squadra mdj2 ritiene che i prossimi tre-cinque anni vedranno un radicale cambiamento che impatter\u00e0 sui consumatori<\/a>, rivenditori e fornitori. Secondo lo studio: “La concorrenza sui prezzi si sta intensificando<\/strong>. L’arrivo di Bunnings, la continua ascesa di Screwfix e rivenditori value\/discount, alleati con B&Q e Wickes nell’impegno verso una sempre maggiore competitivit\u00e0, porter\u00e0 ad una maggiore concorrenza sul prezzo. Ma, mentre il cliente finale ne beneficer\u00e0, i margini sia per i rivenditori sia per i fornitori saranno ulteriormente schiacciati”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondo Gfk il mercato crescer\u00e0 del 2-2,5% annuo<\/strong> nel corso dei prossimi anni, mentre Verdict prevede una crescita del 2,4%<\/strong> nel 2016 per i settori casa<\/a> (fai da te e giardinaggio, mobili, rivestimenti suolo e articoli per la casa), ma il voto inaspettato per Brexit<\/strong> avr\u00e0 delle conseguenze di vasta portata per la vendita al dettaglio, come i potenziali effetti negativi sul mercato immobiliare che, inevitabilmente, peseranno nei piani di investimento futuri. “Il tasso di crescita previsto \u00e8 meno raggiungibile – o per lo meno improbabile che possa essere guidato dalla crescita dei volumi e ancora di pi\u00f9 con l’inflazione e la riduzione di margini sottili”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GDS: Top 3 nel 2015<\/h2>\n\n\n\nKingfisher.<\/strong> Le vendite nel Regno Unito e Irlanda di Kingfisher <\/a>sono aumentate del 5,6% (+ 4,4% a parit\u00e0 di perimetro) pari a 4 853 milioni di sterline, nel corso dell’anno finanziario 2015\/16. Il sistema delle consegne ha registrato un incremento del 18,0% dell’utile di vendita al dettaglio, con 326 milioni di sterline, guidato, come al solito, da una forte performance di Screwfix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
B&Q.<\/strong> Le vendite totali dell’insegna del Gruppo Kingfisher sono aumentate del 1,1% (+ 1,9% a parit\u00e0 di perimetro) raggiungendo i 3 799 milioni di sterline. Le vendite on-line, tra cui la consegna a domicilio, sono cresciute del 29%. Come annunciato, B&Q<\/a> chiuder\u00e0 negozi<\/a> per circa il 15% di mq sul totale superficie espositiva, entro la fine dell’esercizio finanziario 2016\/17. Il primo passo \u00e8 stato fatto l’anno scorso con la chiusura di 30 punti vendita, 35 seguiranno quest’anno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Screwfix.<\/strong> La perla del Gruppo con un fatturato totale in aumento del 26,3% (+ 15,3% a parit\u00e0 di perimetro) e 1 054 milioni di sterline: grande spinta arriva da una forte crescita presso i desk specializzati esclusivi per idraulici ed elettricisti, per non parlare del digitale e mobile (ad esempio mobile + 100%; click&collect + 52%). La ricetta? gamme nuove ed estese e il continuo roll-out di nuovi punti vendita. 62 nuovi negozi sono stati aperti nel corso dell’esercizio 2015\/16, portando il totale a 457. Kingfisher ritiene che vi sia spazio, per Screwfix, per arrivare a quota 600 nel Regno Unito. Quest’anno ne hanno in programma 50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Homebase.<\/strong> il secondo attore della grande distribuzione<\/a> fai da te nel Regno Unito ha registrato un calo delle vendite dello 0,7% a 479,3 milioni di sterline nel 2015. A parit\u00e0 di punti vendita, per\u00f2, le vendite sono cresciute del 2,3%. Alla fine dell’anno, il rivenditore ha operato con 296 negozi, 27 in meno rispetto ad un anno fa e ha annunciato un’ulteriore riduzione del 25%. Entro la fine di febbraio 2016 Homebase \u00e8 stata venduta <\/a>dal suo proprietario Retail Group al gigante australiano del retail Wesfarmers per 340 milioni milioni di sterline. Nel corso dei prossimi tre-cinque anni, i 265 punti vendita acquisiti saranno riconvertiti sotto la bandiera Bunnings. Il primo negozio pilota \u00e8 previsto per quest’anno e il marketing si concentrer\u00e0 su “prezzi sempre bassi” e prodotti non core, come ad esempio arredi per interni e imbottiti che dovranno essere eliminati dalla gamma. Wesfarmers ha annunciato di spendere altri 500 milioni di sterline per il remodelling dei negozi del Regno Unito. Dopo l’acquisizione gli australiani hanno rapidamente messo mano alle gamme di base in offerta, per concentrarsi sul miglioramento casa e mercato giardino. Hanno ampliato la possibilit\u00e0 di scelta nelle gamme e stock pi\u00f9 profondi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Travis Perkins Group.<\/strong> La divisione consumer del Gruppo, con le sue insegne Wickes, Toolstation e Tile Giant<\/strong> ha realizzato una crescita dei ricavi dell’8,0% (like-for-like 5,3%), per un totale di 1 386 mio di sterline. L’utile operativo \u00e8 aumentato del 23,4% a 95 milioni di sterline. La catena di fai da te Wickes<\/strong> ha aperto nuovi negozi con un nuovo concetto che vede migliorare l’esperienza di acquisto sia per il professionista sia per il privato, aumentando l’ampiezza gamma e la disponibilit\u00e0 della merce a scaffale. I nuovi layout dei negozi hanno lo scopo di massimizzare le gicenze di prodotto e dare maggiore attenzione alle attivit\u00e0 stagionali e promozionali. Altri quattro negozi sono stati convertiti nel nuovo formato e la ristrutturazione dei negozi esistenti continuer\u00e0 anche per l’anno in corso. Toolstation<\/strong> ha aperto 40 nuovi punti vendita nel 2015 portando la rete dei negozi totale a 224. Toolstation e Wickes hanno migliorato le loro proposte on line, introducendo il nuovo servizio one-hour click & collect. Wickes prevede di continuare ad espandere la propria rete tra i 10 e i 15 nuovi negozi all’anno, mentre le previsioni per Toolstation sono di almeno 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Changes in the UK DIY market<\/h1>\n\n\n\n
The UK home improvement multiples market increased by around 4% in 2015<\/strong>, in value terms, according to a study of AMA Research. The largest product category within the sector is garden, domestic landscaping and leisure accounting for over 20% of total sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between 2004 and 2012 the UK DIY and Garding market shrinked form GBP 12 bn to GBP 10 bn<\/strong>. Since 2012 the market began to grow again and in 2015 it had recoverd to GBP 11 bn, still some 10% below the peak in 2004. This is apparent form mdj2 associates\u2019 new report on the UK DIY Market: “Big bets placed – who will win?” based on Verdict data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a decade where the market has seen only gradual evolution, the mdj2 team believes that the next three to five years will see radical change that will impact on consumers, retailers and suppliers. The study says: \u201ePrice competition is intensifying. The arrival of Bunnings, the continuing rise of Screwfix and the value\/discount retailers allied with B&Q and Wickes commitment to price competitiveness<\/strong> will lead to greater competition on price. While the end customer will benefit, margins for both retailers and suppliers will be further squeezed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Gfk forcasts the market will grow by 2-2.5% p.a. during the next years. Verdict predicted a growth of 2.4% in 2016 for the combined home sectors (DIY & gardening, furniture & floorcoverings and homewares) but the unexpected vote for Brexit will have far reaching consequences for retail <\/strong>in the home sectors, as the potential negative effects on the housing market weigh heavily on their future investment plans. \u201cT<\/strong>his growth rate <\/strong>is now looking less achievable \u2013 or at least unlikely to be driven by volume growth and more so by inflation, therefore reducing already thin margins\u201d, says Verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Top 3 in 2015<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Kingfisher<\/strong>\u2019s UK and Ireland sales were up 5.6% (+4.4% like-for-like) to GBP 4 853 mio in the finacial year 2015\/16. The businesses deliverd an 18.0% increase in retail profit to GBP 326 mio, led by a strong performance from Screwfix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
B&Q <\/strong>total sales increased by 1.1% (+1.9% like-for-like) to GBP 3 799 mio. Total transacted online sales, including home delivery grew by 29%. As announced, B&Q will close around 15% of space by the end of financial year 2016\/17. The first step was taken last year with the closure of 30 outlets, 35 more to follow this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Screwfix <\/strong>grew total sales by 26.3% (+15.3% like-for-like) to GBP 1 054 mio, driven by strong growth from the specialist trade desks exclusive to plumbers and electricians, strong digital and mobile growth (e.g. mobile +100%; click & collect +52%); new and extended ranges; and the continued roll-out of new outlets. 62 net new outlets were opened in the financial year 2015\/16, taking the total to 457. Kingfisher believes there is scope for Screwfix to have around 600 stores in the UK, with 50 planned for this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Homebase,<\/strong> the second large DIY retailer in the UK, saw a sales decline by 0,7% to GBP 1 479,3 mio in 2015. Like-for-like sales grew by 2.3%. At the end of the year the retailer operated 296 stores, 27 less than a year before, and announced a further 25% reduction in store estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the end of february 2016 Homebase was sold by its owner Home Retail Group to the Australian retail giant Wesfarmers for GBP 340 mio. During the next three to five years the 265 acquired stores will be rebranded under the Bunnings banner. The first pilot store is expected to open this year. The markting will focus on \u201calways low prices\u201d and non-core products e.g. indoor furniture and soft furnishings are to be removed from the range. Wesfarmers announced to spend a further GBP 500 mio on upgrading the UK stores. After the acquisition the Australians quickly reshaped the core ranges on offer fo focus on the home improvement and garden market. They established wider product choices and deeper stock holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The consumer division of Travis Perkins<\/strong> Group with its Wickes, Toolstation and Tile Giant businesses realized a revenue growth of 8.0% (like-for-like 5.3%) up to GBP 1 386 mio. The adjusted operating profit increased by 23.4% to GBP 95 mio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DIY chain Wickes opened for new stores in a new concept that views to improving the shopping experience for both trade and retail customers, whilst also increasing range breadth and availability. The new store layouts aim to maximise product adjancies and give more focus to seasonal and promotional activities. Another four stores were converted to the new format. The refurbishment of existing stores will continue. Toolstation opened 40 new branches throughout 2015 taking the total store network to 224. Toolstation and Wickes enhanced their online propositions with the introduction of a new one-hour click & collect service. Both businesses will remain on an expansionary path: Wickes plans to continue to expand its network by between 10 and 15 new stores per year, and Toolstation by at least 30 per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
